introduction

An ancient Taoist saying has served as the inspiration for ‘Balance’; "the lesser hermit lives in seclusion in the countryside, while the greater hermit does so in the city." This saying has prompted me to explore the concept of finding inner peace amidst the chaotic and noisy city environment. The true essence of seclusion, in my view, lies in discovering tranquility within the depths of our own souls, even in the heart of the city. To delve into this notion, I have chosen to combine the mediums of painting and photography, as they both offer unique ways of observing and interpreting the world.

‘Balance’ utilizes both glass sheet installations and a single channel video. The glass sheets, with their transparent and reflective properties, symbolize the interplay between the seen and unseen, and the tangible and intangible. By infusing the glass with layers of imagery and textures, I invite the viewer to peer through the surface and immerse themselves in the depth and complexity of the urban environment.

Projecting above the glass installation, the single channel video serves as a narrative thread that weaves together the various moments and locations that I have explored. Through a carefully crafted visual composition, the video takes the viewer on a meditative journey, guiding them through the chaos and cacophony of the city towards moments of stillness and inner peace. The audiovisual elements blend harmoniously, creating a multisensory experience that resonates with the viewers’ emotions. Ultimately, I aim to recreate the sensory experience of the city while inviting contemplation and reflection.
